Government’s Warm Homes Plan Drives Heat Pump Growth

The UK Government’s ambitious Warm Homes Plan is creating significant opportunities for social housing providers and mechanical contractors across the sector.

With £374 million allocated to the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund for 2025-2026, housing associations can now access substantial funding to upgrade heating systems and improve energy efficiency for tenants.

Record-Breaking Installations

2024 has seen unprecedented growth in the heat pump sector, with over 98,000 installations completed – a 58% increase from the previous year’s 62,000 units. This surge reflects both increased government support and growing confidence in renewable heating technology.

Simplified Planning Rules

From early 2025, installing heat pumps will become easier as the government removes the 1-metre boundary rule. This planning relaxation will particularly benefit properties with limited outdoor space, making heat pump installations viable for more social housing sites.

Financial Support Available

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme continues to offer £7,500 grants per property, helping offset installation costs. Combined with the Social Housing Fund, this creates a clear pathway for housing providers to transition away from fossil fuel heating systems.

What This Means for the Industry

For mechanical contractors working in social housing, these changes represent substantial project opportunities over the coming years. As housing associations work to meet decarbonization targets, demand for skilled installation teams with renewable heating expertise will continue to grow.

The shift toward heat pumps also requires ongoing maintenance and servicing, creating long-term relationships between contractors and housing providers beyond the initial installation phase.
